Worker killed at Super Pit

Mine operator Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines confirmed the death and said the truck was stationary at the time of the incident. According to a report in the West Australian, the 53-year-old woman was cleaning the windscreen of the truck before she fell and was found unconscious.The woman was initially taken to Kalgoorlie Regional Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital, where she died on Wednesday afternoon.“This is a tragedy and we are devastated at the loss of a colleague,” acting registered mine manager David Nicholson said.“Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the family and friends at this difficult time.”The Super Pit employs around 1000 people and staff at the mine have been offered counselling.The coroner and the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection will investigate the incident.The Super Pit is Australia’s largest gold mine and is a 50:50 joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation and Newmont Mining Corporation.
