End-of-life tyres are a difficult type of waste to tackle. But there are a number of sustainable reuses for this material, such as tyre-derived fuel and rubber crumb for use in roads and other surfaces. Tasmania is offering a solution.
The Waste Tyre Reprocessing Grant Program: Roads to Resource Recovery is a one-off grant providing up to $3 million to support industry to invest in a rubber crumbing plant to produce materials for reuse in road surfacing, or to develop other genuine solutions for tyre reuse in Tasmania.
The name of the program reflects that there is more than one way to improve resource recovery, but that the main focus is recycled crumbed rubber for Tasmanian roads. Alternative proposals for reprocessing end of life tyres will be considered, but submissions that most closely align with the Government commitment to assist industry to construct a crumbed rubber plant in Tasmania will be preferred.
Applicants must be accredited under the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme and waste tyre feedstock should be sourced from accredited tyre retailers, waste tyre collectors, or processors.
