Tallest building in China progresses from drawing board

The three towers are being built by the Shanghai Tower Construction & Development Co, and have been designed by global architectural design firm Gensler.Adjacent to the central 632m Shanghai Tower will be the Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center (SWFC). Shanghai Tower Construction & Development said the design of the Jin Mao Tower paid homage to China’s past, and the SWFC’s design signified China’s recent economic growth. The Shanghai Tower’s design is meant to signify China’s future. The three buildings will be built in the Luijiazui Finance and Trade Zone, an area of Shanghai that was farmland 18 years ago. The Shanghai Tower will house Class-A office space, retail outlets, a luxury hotel and cultural venues. The uppermost floors will feature the world’s highest non-enclosed observation deck. The Shanghai Tower will also feature a major event and exhibition space, while underground there will be connections to the Shanghai Metro subway and three floors of parking. The development is slated for completion in 2014.
