New guide for earthmoving near powerlines

The handbook, “Using earthmoving equipment near overhead electrical assets”, is based on the existing WorkSafe “No go zone” publications. It outlines how to establish safe work procedures using knowledge of the equipment’s design limits and the overhead electrical assets. The earthmoving vehicles targeted in the handbook are backhoes, hydraulic excavators, front-end loaders, tip trucks, drills and trenchers and tractors and scrapers. The electrical assets considered in the handbook are those up to and including 66 kilovolt and must be on power poles.WorkSafe said if employers and contractors implemented the guidelines in the new handbook, they would meet Occupational Health and Safety obligations regarding the risks involved with work near overhead powerlines. To download a copy of the handbook, visit worksafe.vic.gov.au. A limited number of copies are also available for small earthmoving contractors. Call WorkSafe’s Advisory Service on 1800 136 089 for a copy.
