Grants help prepare Tasmania for landfill levy

The government of Tasmania recently passed new legislation – The Waste and Resource Recovery Bill 2021 – that establishes a state-wide levy that will encourage the diversion of materials from landfill and drive investment in alternatives to landfill, so more materials will be recovered from waste streams and turned into new and valuable products.

Creating a real carbon pump

The COP26 climate change summit was recently held in Glasgow. The reason we needed the summit was that we know how to pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere but singularly useless at getting it back out again. Australia releases more than 580MT per year of carbon dioxide equivalent into the global atmosphere. Up to 2.7 per cent of these greenhouse gas emissions are contributed by the waste sector.

A cheat sheet on the circular economy

A Circular Economy proposes a system which minimises extraction, keeps materials in the economy for as long as possible and ensures they are able to be reused, repurposed or recycled at the end of their first life. It minimises environmental externalities and maximises use of renewable resources including energy.
