New contracts—for 30 councils across Melbourne—have secured reliable disposal of Melbourne’s household waste to landfill. The contracts – for 30 councils across Melbourne – were negotiated by Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) as part of a collaborative procurement on behalf of the councils, are for four years, with two by two year options for extensions providing councils flexibility and service continuity.
The contracts, which manage over 940,000 tonnes of Melbourne’s household waste, bring together the largest number of councils ever to participate in a collaborative procurement in Victoria.“Councils and industry benefit from the new contracts for reliable disposal of household waste to landfill across Melbourne,” said MWRRG CEO Jill Riseley. “These contracts are the culmination of over two years work, including consultation with industry and councils to ensure modern and robust contracts that meet everyone’s needs.”Citywide, Cleanaway, Hanson and Suez have been engaged through the contracts to deliver the landfill services. In a further value add, MWRRG brings councils and contractors together regularly through a regular forum to manage performance and mitigate emerging risks, ensuring standards are consistently met. While avoidance, reuse and recycling are the most preferred options for managing waste, landfill is an important part of an integrated waste and resource recovery system in the current landscape.
