Multi award-winning Soft Landing is delighted to have been awarded the regions mattress recycling contract by South Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC).
Since 2009, Soft Landing has recycled almost 740,000 mattresses. With organic growth and the recent acquisition of the next largest mattress recycler in Australia, TIC Mattress Recycling, volumes have accelerated to around 350,000 annually.
“The scale of tonnage our teams strive to divert from landfill is enormous,” said Evan Cocks, acting general manager of Soft Landing.
“As many as 1.25 million mattresses end up in landfill in Australia each year, equating to around 20,000 tonnes of steel, wood and foam – or one per cent of all landfill waste.”
Looking forward to supporting the team in the SSROC region, Soft Landing is on track to recycling over 40,000 mattresses for Sydney residents this year.
Soft Landing deconstructs each mattress and on-sells the components. The steel springs are recycled into building products like roofing materials, the foam into carpet underlay, and the timber is mulched.
Soft Landing also focus on providing employment and training opportunities for people experiencing disadvantage.
With parent body Community Resources registered with Indigenous business platform Supply Nation, following a 30-year track record working alongside Aboriginal communities in regional NSW, Soft Landing has re-focused its social impact to become an Employer of Choice for Aboriginal people in Sydney.
Trainee, Harley has welcomed the opportunity to re-connect to employment and build a career in this exciting industry. Harley is mid-way through completing his Certificate II in Waste Management and is optimistic for what the future holds.
“Soft Landing has given me a new purpose, it’s a great feeling getting to work with a supportive and friendly team and knowing I receive a regular income each week,” he added.
It is this combination of environmental and social dedication that put Soft Landing in the lead for the SSROC contract, and their industry mattress product stewardship scheme.
