Many choose hard facing, but welding engineer Norm Smith warns that care needs to be taken working with quenched and tempered steels, as the steel can be left more brittle. Knowledge of metal properties and the appropriate welding methods to use with them is important, particularly where contractors look to undertake this work themselves. Correctly applied, hard facing is a valuable way to maintain the integrity of an attachment or component so that its design life is not compromised by excessive wear. Some choose sacrificial wear components such as Domite (high chromium white iron bonded to a mild steel backing plate) as a simpler alternative for addressing wear concerns. As the component wears, it is replaced. Domite is available in a range of shapes and sizes, and can be readily cut and shaped.
