FOGO added to Subiaco bin collection system

The Western Australian City of Subiaco has introduced a three-bin system. This  will allow households to recycle their food organics and garden organics (FOGO) waste.

The city is the 17th local government to start FOGO services, and the ninth in the Perth metropolitan region to do so.

Five thousand households in Subiaco will receive a kitchen caddy for food scraps. They will also get two rolls of compostable liners as part of the City’s transition.

The State’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 has a target to deliver a harmonised FOGO kerbside collection system in the Perth and Peel regions by 2025.

The State Government has committed $20 million to support local governments transitioning to three-bin FOGO services. This is through the Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program. Under this program, $64,753 of funding has been committed to the City of Subiaco.

Three-bin FOGO services recover organic materials that is recycled into products, including compost and soil conditioner. FOGO is the single biggest contribution local governments can make to achieving Western Australia’s material recovery targets for municipal solid waste.

The three-bin FOGO kerbside collection service consists of a red-lid bin for general waste, a yellow-lid bin for co-mingled recycling, as well as there being a green-lid bin for FOGO.

Adrian Wiley, Director Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, said it is great to see another suburb in Perth’s western suburbs join the FOGO revolution.

“Subiaco residents now will be able to reduce their environmental footprint with their FOGO waste collected and made into compost for our gardens,” he said.

“We are working with a range of governments in Perth to make the transition to FOGO. We would like to see more councils that haven’t yet considered FOGO, to get in contact and work with us to start their own FOGO services.”
