Commercial food waste collections coming to NSW

The NSW Government is going to mandate commercial food waste collection (COFO). This is excellent for NSW, and the Minister Penny Sharpe and Premier Chris Minns are to be congratulated for this reform. For those of you who don’t know what we’re talking about, from July 1, 2025 large food waste generators will need to have a dedicated food waste collection system. Food waste will no longer be able to go to landfill. Food waste in landfill is a massive greenhouse gas generator, contributing most of the 11 million tonnes of greenhouse gases released from landfill each year. Tax incentive introduced for food waste

WA Senator Dean Smith has tabled a private Senators Bill in federal parliament that is designed change Australia’s approach to food donation. The National Food Donation Tax Incentive aims to amend the tax system to offer deductions for businesses donating food and essential services, such as refrigeration and transportation, to food rescue organisations. EPA wants your say on FOGO and landfill levies

The NSW Government is taking steps to reduce waste ending up in landfill and boost recycling efforts, with two discussion papers opening for feedback. The draft Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) Mandates and the Waste Levy Review are part of a broader commitments to increase recycling, reduce the waste NSW produces, and minimise the amount of organic waste going to landfill.
