BMD secures tender for $25M wharf

Work is to begin at the end of the month at the former BHP steelworks site and is expected to be completed by late next year. The wharf involves the upgrade of a former BHP ore berth and the provision of hardstand for cargo handling, and is to be known as Mayfield No. 4 Berth.Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said tender submissions were short-listed in August and the board of Newcastle Port Corporation discussed them at its October meeting. “Of course, ultimately, what we’d like to see is containers come to Newcastle, but given that there is a major expansion in Sydney that’s not going to happen in the foreseeable future, but what is important for the government to do is make sure that we’re ready to exploit any opportunity or any proposition that comes forward from the private sector,” he said.Newcastle Port Corporation chief executive Gary Webb said it was an exciting development and that the timeframe for its completion was particularly pleasing.
