The Northern Territory Government is investing in technology that helps business recycle waste into new products.
Two Northern Territory businesses have benefited from more than $1.5 million under the Circular Economy NT (CENT) grant program.
CENT aims to strengthen the circular economy sector in the Territory by funding projects that will grow the economy by turning waste into a valuable commodity.
The two successful projects demonstrated economic development opportunities through the development of new domestic markets for recycled materials.
Ostojic Group Pty Ltd received a $1,248,995 grant to purchase new crushing and screening technology to develop recycled road base and other valuable products suitable for reuse by the construction industry.
The technology separates steel/metal from concrete waste, processes waste concrete and blends it with other materials to create new products.
The project aims to divert 55,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste from going to landfill per year and create 4 operational jobs.
Remote Industries Australia Pty Ltd received a $274,965 grant for setting up a concrete recycling facility in Tennant Creek to service the Barkly region.
The project aims to divert 4000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste from going to landfill every year and recycle it into material and products that can be used as road base, laydown pads and for other upgrade and refurbishment works.
The CENT grant program is a key element of the NT Circular Economy Strategy 2022-27.
The Strategy sets out a coordinated approach across all tiers of government to encourage investment by business and industry to increase waste recovery, reuse and recycling.
“CENT provides an opportunity for business and industry to reduce the amount of waste they produce, reduce their costs and work towards a more sustainable future,” said Kate Worden, NT Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water Security.
“Adopting new approaches to the way we reprocess waste will create significant economic and environmental benefits for all Territorians.”
