WMRR offers scholarships to young professionals

The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia continues to support WARR young professionals in our industry by offering two scholarship opportunities for 2024, by providing our YP members (35 years and younger) an opportunity to attend and present at one of its national conferences in 2024, with all expenses related to travel and conference registration covered as part of the scholarship.

The first scholarship will be for the ENVIRO Conference on 25- 26 June (Brisbane) and the second for WMRR’s inaugural Australian Resource Recovery on 16-17 October (Adelaide).

Applications are now open the ENVIRO Conference with applications closing on Tuesday 2 April 2024.

“Our role as the national peak industry body for the entire waste management and resource recovery industry is to lead its success, and as part of that we have an important role to play in the development of future leaders and technical experts,” said WMRR Chief Executive Officer Gayle Sloan.

Sloane said it is part of WMRR’s objectives to foster the younger members of the industry, not only so they remain part of it, but to flourish in it and gain exposure to all that it can offer.

“It’s why we have Young Professionals Working Groups in order that 35s and under can meet like-minded peers, network and learn from the experiences of others,”  she said.

“Our industry’s time has arrived and only growing in importance as extending the life of materials, using less, climate change and the carbon mitigation is at the forefront of policymakers’ thinking. We need to work hard to ensure we attract the best and the brightest to our industry and keep them, especially as younger people are more mobile these days – typically not the ‘one company’ types of older generations.

The scholarship is also a chance to showcase the industry’s young professionals to a wider audience and Sloane hopes these types of opportunities attract even more to our industry.

“I know previous winners have found the opportunity incredibly worthwhile and I can’t wait to see all the nominations. The challenge for the expert industry panel isn’t picking a winner for each conference – it’s picking only one winner,”  she said.
