Three more Public Waste Transfer Stations PWTS are to open shortly in NSW and they are different to what the industry traditionally does. With many accolades, award finalist, and most recently winning the Innovation Award – Regional, the LBin system is gaining broader acceptance. The LBin system features include; easy flat to floor setout, lay and display inspection of loads and easy extraction of recyclables and problem waste.
Even better, these LBin systems are affordable, costing less than 25 per cent of traditional systems. Two of the three new sites replace unsafe Sawtooth direct to bulk bin systems, and one replaces a direct-to-landfill model. We interviewed Jason Lacey, the managing director of Contained Waste Solutions, who supply the LBin systems, about its recent successes.
What has been the response to this new System?
“We get fantastic engagement from councils who understand that they have the OH&S Liability, Diversion Targets and Licence Compliance issues that need fixing. These customers see the value, flexibility, affordability and speed of deployment of the systems and are truly excited.”
Why isn’t everyone doing it now?
“Some councils are very conservative and prefer to spend millions on traditional systems that feel like the safe choice, because they have been around for more than 80 years. The reality is that the design concepts come from an era where OH&S requirements were comparatively non-existent, and EPA’s, with their licence conditions, did not exist. These old system designs really don’t cut it today”.
Why would they do this?
“The reasons vary, but it is clear that many have a strong reliance upon waste industry consultants. Some of these consultancies who keep pushing out the same old designs are reluctant to take on something new. We can deliver all our equipment often at a lower cost than the design fees for a sawtooth or pushpit.”
Surely there is an opportunity for consultancies to design with your system?
“Consultancies focused on effective customer solutions are engaging with the LBin system positively. Consultancies with larger Civil/Structural design appear reluctant to engage, despite us offering free training, design support and 3D models. We are getting feedback of misinformation about the LBin system from some.”
What would you say to councils juggling with a traditional design versus an LBin System?
“Insanity is to keep doing the same old thing and expect different results. OH&S & EPA regulations are demanding different results.”
