TOMRA Cleanaway has been awarded the title of Waste and Recycling Company of the Year at the 2025 Australian Freight Industry Awards (AFIAs), recognising its leadership in sustainable resource recovery, container deposit scheme (CDS) operations, and innovation in recycling across Australia.

The award celebrates TOMRA Cleanaway’s achievements in expanding access to container refund points, delivering high-quality material recovery for reuse, and driving circular economy outcomes through strong partnerships with industry, communities, and government across three east coast Australian states.

James Dorney, CEO of TOMRA Cleanaway, said the recognition reflects the company’s commitment to driving value from recycling to deliver a more sustainable future.

“This award is a tremendous acknowledgement of the work our teams do every day to deliver efficient, world-class recycling solutions for Australians,” he said.

“It highlights the vital role that container deposit systems and modern recycling infrastructure play in protecting our environment, reducing waste, and creating real value from resources that would otherwise be lost.”

Chair of TOMRA Cleanaway Tor Eirik Knutsen emphasised the significance of the win for TOMRA Cleanaway’s people and its leadership in advancing deposit return systems and extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks in Australia.

“This achievement belongs to every member of our team across Australia, who work tirelessly to deliver high standards of service and sustainability outcomes. It is also a strong endorsement of deposit return systems and EPR models as proven pathways to achieve circular economy success. We are proud to see TOMRA Cleanaway recognised for our contribution to building a more sustainable future for all Australians,” Knutsen said.

The AFIAs, hosted by the Victorian Transport Association, are among the most respected accolades in the logistics, freight, and supply chain sectors. The Waste and Recycling Company of the Year award specifically recognises excellence in sustainable waste management, recycling innovation, and industry leadership.

TOMRA Cleanaway remains committed to expanding recycling access, investing in infrastructure, and collaborating with industry and government to drive greater resource recovery and circular economy outcomes nationwide.

“Every day, our industry keeps Australia moving—delivering goods, connecting businesses, and supporting livelihoods. From ports to paddocks, we are the engine room of the economy,” said Victorian Transport Association CEO Peter Anderson.

“This year we saw an exceptional number of nominations, reflecting the depth of talent and innovation across our industry. It’s clear that organisations are investing in their people, their technology, and their sustainability goals—and they’re proud to showcase that work. The judging panel had a tough job, and every finalist should be commended.”

“For 35 years, these awards have celebrated the individuals and organisations who lead by example and push our industry forward,” said Australian Freight Industry Awards Chair Dennis Ryan.

“Strong industry associations like the VTA provide a trusted platform for collaboration, where operators, suppliers, and regulators come together to solve shared challenges and influence meaningful change.

“Equally important is the opportunity to celebrate excellence and innovation—because recognising achievement inspires progress. Congratulations to all our finalists and winners. You make this industry one we can all be proud of.”
