Variously described around the waste industry as a blatant tax grab by some and as a boon for the environment by others, the NSW Government still has some details to fill in about its plans to raise the waste levy. But what it has already made clear is that, by 2016, every tonne of Sydney waste will raise at least $128, plus CPI, for the state coffers. - more

Selling off NSW-owned WSN Environmental Solutions (ex-Waste Service NSW) has long been the policy of the state’s Liberal Opposition, and this is now also the Labor Government’s preferred position. Shadow Environment Minister Pru Goward, however, has criticised the government for not committing to a speedier sale, accusing it of having something to hide. - more

‘Not completely unexpected, but still a bit of shock’ appears to be the general response of the NSW councils that found out following last week’s mini-budget that, from next July, they will be paying the state a $10 levy on any waste they send to landfill. Shareholders of Republic Services and Allied Waste Industries have voted in favor of a merger that will create the second largest waste player in the US, a US$9 billion ($14 billion) rival to market leader Waste Management, which reported revenue of nearly $20 billion last year. The deal still has to clear regulatory approval, however, and at least one group is arguing it shouldn’t be allowed to proceed. - more

A long-standing illegal rubbish dump operating at Latrobe University’s Beechworth campus has been closed and the site cleaned up, says EPA Victoria north east regional manager Ann Telford, after the regulator and university “worked closely” to resolve the issue. - more
